Circadian Lighting Audit - What Is Your Lighting Really Doing?

Most of us experience lighting visually. We notice whether a room feels bright or subdued, whether an interior is warm and inviting, and whether materials, artwork and finishes appear as the designer intended.


What is less obvious is that light is also creating a continuous stream of biological information for the people occupying that space. From the first light we experience in the morning to the lower, warmer light our bodies naturally expect towards the end of the day, light is one of the principal signals used by the circadian system to regulate our 24-hour rhythm. It influences sleep and wakefulness, alertness and rest, hormone production and many other physiological processes.

Natural daylight delivers these changing signals inherently. Artificial lighting, unless it has been designed with circadian response in mind, often does not. That raises an important question for owners of luxury residences and yachts alike: a lighting system may look exceptional, but how well is it actually performing for the people living in it?

This is the question at the heart of MP Tech’s Circadian Lighting Audit.

Looking beyond whether a space is ‘bright enough’


Traditional lighting design has understandably focused on visual performance: providing sufficient illumination, creating atmosphere, revealing architecture and supporting the aesthetic of a space.


All of these remain fundamental, but our understanding of light now extends well beyond visual lux levels alone.


The eye contains photoreceptors that enable vision, but also light-sensitive cells involved in regulating the circadian system. Their response is influenced not simply by how bright a light appears, but by its spectral composition, intensity, timing and duration.

This means two spaces that look similarly bright can produce very different biological responses.

Measures such as melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (mEDI) help us assess the circadian effect of a lighting environment, while spectral quality, colour rendering and flicker performance all contribute to the wider quality of the light.

Assessing healthy lighting therefore requires more than simply looking at colour temperature or brightness.


The same space can need very different light

Consider a residential kitchen at 7.30 in the morning. It may be where someone has breakfast and begins their day, so stronger, high-quality light can support both visual clarity and the biological signal that daytime has begun.

Return to the same room at 9.30 in the evening and the requirement has changed completely. The occupants may be preparing for bed, yet a conventional lighting system could still be delivering essentially the same intensity and spectrum it provided twelve hours earlier.

The room has not changed, but the person using it has.

On board a yacht, the relationship between daylight, artificial light and human routine can be more complex still. Guests may move between intense exterior daylight and comparatively low-light interiors, while crew working below deck can spend significant periods without meaningful daylight exposure. Watch patterns, overnight passages and changes in time zone add further demands.

This is where lighting becomes more than a specification exercise.


How healthy is your existing lighting?


For an existing home or yacht, the answer does not necessarily lie in replacing the entire lighting system.


MP Tech’s Circadian Light-Use Audit establishes the condition and performance of the current installation and assesses it against our four pillars of healthy lighting.


Full-spectrum LED technology considers the spectral quality of the artificial light and how closely it reflects the broad, balanced spectrum found in natural daylight.

High colour rendering assesses how accurately that light reveals colour. In a carefully designed residence or yacht interior, this affects everything from timber, stone and fabrics to artwork, food and skin tones. MP Tech works towards a high CRI benchmark of 97+.

Flicker-free performance considers the stability of the LED source. Poorly matched drivers or dimming systems can create rapid fluctuations in light output which may not always be consciously visible but can affect visual comfort.

Finally, m-EDI helps us assess the biological strength of the light and whether it is providing an appropriate circadian signal at the right time of day.

Importantly, the objective is not simply to maximise circadian stimulation. Healthy lighting is about delivering stronger biological signals when we should be alert and reducing them as the body approaches its natural period of rest.


Understanding how the space is used


Technical performance only tells part of the story. The audit also considers how people actually move through and use the environment.


In a residence, a home office, gym or breakfast area has a very different lighting requirement from a bedroom or evening living space. On board, guest accommodation, crew cabins, mess areas, corridors, the bridge and wellness spaces each have their own patterns of use.

By bringing the technical performance of the lighting together with the way the space functions throughout the day, we can identify where the existing system is performing well and where improvement would have the greatest impact.


From audit to the right level of intervention


Once the current lighting environment has been assessed, there are broadly two routes forward.


For some homes or yachts, the most appropriate response will be a circadian-friendly lighting update. Existing infrastructure may remain perfectly serviceable, while improvements to LED sources, drivers or selected fittings can bring the system much closer to the principles of healthy lighting without unnecessary disruption.

This can be particularly valuable during a residential refurbishment or yacht refit, where the aim is to improve performance while retaining elements of the existing installation that still work well.

In other cases, the audit may demonstrate that the greater opportunity lies in a full HumanCentric Lighting system (HCL).

HCL takes the principles of healthy lighting further by allowing the environment to change dynamically throughout the day. Intensity and spectral composition can be carefully controlled to reflect the natural progression of daylight: stronger and more biologically effective during the morning and daytime, then progressively warmer and softer as evening approaches.

These changes can happen automatically, integrated into the way the home or yacht operates, so the lighting supports the occupants without requiring constant adjustment.

This is where lighting moves beyond individual fixtures and scenes and becomes part of the architecture of daily life.


Better lighting starts with evidence


The value of an audit is that it replaces assumption with evidence.


It may reveal that much of the existing system can be retained and intelligently upgraded, or it may identify limitations in the underlying technology that make a more comprehensive HCL approach worthwhile.

Either way, the starting point is the same: understanding how the current lighting performs against the four pillars of healthy lighting and deciding what level of intervention is genuinely appropriate.

The result is still beautiful light. The difference is that its performance is considered not only in terms of what the eye sees, but also in terms of how the human body experiences it.
